Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep Vein Thrombosis is blood clot that forms in a vein in the body. Blood clots occur when blood thickens and clumps together.

Clinical manifestation

When the clot forms, it reduces the speed of blood flow and causes edema in the legs. The clot will foat in the blood, this could lead to artery embolism, acute pulmonary embolism, myocardial infraction and brain infraction etc.

Pathology

  • Damage of the vein wall
  • Blood coagulates easily when the anesthetized muscle is relaxed during surgery by forming blood clot. This is seen in cesarean section or long-term bedridden patients who are prone to DVT.
  • Leg edema due to reduced movement of body.

Therapy

  • Physical therapy: Anti-embolism stockings
  • Medication: Nadroparin, but not for the elderly
  • Hemorrhagic patients
  • Patients with a reaction against anticoagulants.
